Stigma serves a purpose

Robert Rector: Marriage is America’s number-one weapon against child poverty.

The attempt to remove the stigma attached to unwed childbirth was well intentioned, but it's come at a huge cost. Unwed births have climbed to 40%, driving poverty rates up with them. Sadly, this gets little attention.

We've seen the same phenomenon with obesity, where we've actively campaigned to reduce the stigma associated with being overweight, only to see the obesity rate skyrocket.

There are no solutions, just trade offs. Stigma serves a purpose.
