The New York Times (via Betsy’s Page) has Kerry catching a lot of sharp criticism as well as some advice on his campaign. I expect we’ll be seeing a lot more of these types of articles. I think Kerry will continue to fade through the election, which will leave the Democrats and the media (redundant, I know) with egg on their collective faces.
Four years ago, liberals could not believe their candidate lost to the “dim-witted” Bush. Now, after four years of Bush’s “miserable failures”, despite a rabid base, and with the luxury of culling their best “anybody-but-Bush” candidate from a very deep pool, the Dems face the horror of losing yet another race they couldn’t lose.
With their world falling apart, look for the Dems to go ugly--very ugly. In the meantime, they must begin constructing a cover story. Since it’s unthinkable that their ideas could ever be rejected, they have begun laying the groundwork for the rationalization that will follow. In 2000, they were stuck with an “unlikable candidate,” and had the election stolen from them. In 2004, the story will be a miserably run campaign, combined with Bush smear tactics. If Kerry’s numbers continue to fall, the media might ever resort to taking the Swifies seriously, or actually demand that Kerry release his records.
Update: Crush Kerry has more on this. And Betsy points out that she predicted this several weeks ago.
